The Broadcast A2 Tool Kit: What to Carry and Why

The right A2 tool kit is not the biggest one. It is the bag that has the next tool you need: something to follow signal, prove a cable, make a quick repair, or keep a small problem from becoming a show problem.
What I keep closest at hand:
- Qbox and a known-good short XLR cable
- Sharpies and label tape
- Dedicated cable tester
- Multimeter with rated test leads
- Multitool, 6-in-1 screwdriver, and precision drivers
- Flashlight and headlamp
- VFL, optical power meter, and the correct cleaners when fiber is part of the show
Everything else can live deeper in the bag.

Signal and Cable-Testing Tools
Most troubleshooting gets easier once you can answer three questions: Is signal here? Is power here? Is this cable actually good? A Qbox, cable tester, and multimeter cover most of that ground.
Whirlwind Qbox
The Qbox is the troubleshooting tool I reach for most. It can listen to analog audio at different points in a signal path, and its microphone and tone generator can send audio in the other direction. The voltage LEDs also provide a quick indication that DC is present on an IFB, phantom-power, or intercom circuit.
Those LEDs show that voltage is present; they do not tell you exactly how much. A Qbox also does not generate phantom or intercom power or provide a complete pin-to-pin wiring test. Use the signal you already have. If the microphone, IFB feed, or intercom signal is usable, follow it through the path. Substitute tone when the original source is unreliable or when you are identifying an unknown route.
Dedicated Cable Tester
Before running a long cable, test it. A dedicated tester, such as the Whirlwind Cable Tester, can show opens, shorts, and reversed conductors more clearly than an improvised audio test. When checking a suspected intermittent, flex the cable near both connectors and other stress points while watching the tester.
Multimeter
A multimeter is useful when a simple audio or voltage indication is not enough. I mainly use mine for checking batteries, measuring DC voltage, and testing resistance or continuity on disconnected cables.
Perform continuity and resistance tests only on de-energized circuits. Disconnect the cable or circuit from power and connected equipment first. Testing energized facility power belongs to a trained and authorized electrician.
Sharpies and Label Tape
Carry more than one black Sharpie, a light-colored marker, and several colors of tape. Pick a show color that is not already common on the cables or equipment in use. Your labels will be easier to spot, and old labels from the last production will stand out.
A label should tell the next person what something does, not just which number it is. “IFB 4” is more useful than “4,” and “Stats PL” is more useful than “PL.” For a complete labeling system, see the A2Sound Labeling Guide.
Hand Tools
A multitool handles the odd repair that was not on the advance. For routine work, the correct dedicated tool is faster and less likely to slip.
- Multitool: Tie line, tape, damaged hardware, and unexpected field repairs.
- 6-in-1 screwdriver: Ordinary screws, equipment covers, and BP-325 intercom beltpacks.
- Precision drivers and mini hex keys: DIP switches, recessed controls, terminal blocks, small hardware, and knob set screws.
- Small adjustable wrench: Connector hardware and panel nuts.
- Micro flush cutters: Cleanly trimmed zip-tie tails without sharp edges.
- Scissors or safety cutter: Tape, labels, and packing material.
Do not use a knife tip, key, or oversized screwdriver as a substitute for the correct tool. If you do not understand the adjustment or repair, stop before making it worse.
Flashlight and Headlamp
Carry both. A flashlight is convenient for a quick look behind a rack or under a bleacher. A headlamp leaves both hands free for patching, labeling, or working inside a case. Look for a broad close-work beam, a brighter spot beam, and a low setting that will not light up a dark rehearsal.
Do not trust color in bad light. If a patch depends on a conductor or connector color, use enough white light to identify it correctly.
Fiber-Optic Tools

For basic fiber work, I carry a visual fault locator, an optical power meter, the correct one-click cleaners, and approved wipes and solvent. They answer different questions. Red light at the far end may prove basic continuity, but it does not prove that the fiber is clean or within the system’s loss budget.

Never look directly into a fiber connector or the end of a fiber cable. Transmitted light may be invisible and can still cause eye injury. Treat every fiber as active and follow the system’s safety procedure before inspection or cleaning.
Carrying the Kit

Backpack, messenger bag, or hard case—the right choice is whatever lets you reach the tools you use most and close everything up quickly. I keep the Qbox, tape, markers, flashlight, and common adapters where I can grab them without unpacking the bag. Testers, hand tools, fiber supplies, spare batteries, and weather gear can sit deeper.
A hard case makes sense for meters, inspection equipment, specialty adapters, and anything that should not be crushed. Open pouches and loose tools feel efficient until the first location change or unexpected rainstorm.
Personally Used
Keep Your Backpack off the Ground


I use this folding hook to keep my bag off the ground in the compound. It stays clipped to the bag when not in use and gives me a quick way to hang it from a fence, railing, or another sturdy surface.
Why I like it: It is compact, always attached to the bag, and keeps the backpack out of wet grass and compound mud.
Important: This is a gear hook, not climbing equipment. Attach it only to a sturdy surface that can safely support the bag.

A smaller kit full of tools you know is better than a large case of unfamiliar testers and mystery adapters. Check the batteries, keep a few known-good reference cables, and put every tool back in the same place. Two minutes before air is a bad time to remember you moved the turnaround.
